{pumpkin cake}

I'm in a blogging mood today. We're off to the cabin this afternoon so maybe that's why I'm so bloggy. I think I just created a new word. Spread it around.

In any case, I forgot to post pictures of the cake I made for Stephen and Leone's open house. It was a Pumpkin Spice Cake with Honey Cream Cheese Frosting, Toasted Walnuts, Mandarin Oranges and Pomegrante Seeds. It was delicious and very pretty. What do you think?

{new year's karaoke}

Christian + Karaoke + New Year's Eve + Air Guitar + Creedence Clearwater Revival + Not Knowing The Words = Really Funny

I guess Christian digs for nuggets when he gets nervous. Who knew? Can you all hear me laughing very annoyingly? You're welcome.

{rules to live by:decorating}

Two things I've learned from redecorating my living room: One lesson is from Domino Mag and one is from my charming sister-in-law, NieNie.

The first is that the placement of a sofa can do a great deal of good in a room. I moved my white sofa from against the wall to a great open area in front of our exceptionally large window. The natural light bounces off the white fabric and makes the room seem so fresh. I also noticed that all the pictures that I like of family rooms all have a coffee table of some sort. I especially like the bold fabric on this one.

NieNie and I shopped together for a few fabric selections when we were both set on recovering some upholstered chairs for our homes. I felt so lucky to have her there for her opinion and as we walked through the aisles of fabric, she looked through anything and everything and picked very different things. When she had selected a few seemingly "uncoordinating" fabrics, she asked what I thought of them to which I replied, "Well, they are very cute but they don't really match." And then NieNie's secret to her lovely decorating style came out. She said, "Oh, I don't really pick things that go together. I just pick things that I love." That's when I realized why NieNie's home is so wonderful. When you walk in, you feel something that you love but you can't put your finger on it. It's stylish, whimsical, charming and very pretty but it's also very lived in and very loved. Every piece of furniture, every piece of fabric is loved. She loves her home like she loves her family and you feel it when you enter her Dutch door and see the silhouettes hanging on the wall, the delicious green kitchen, the red armoire that my brother made, the leather couch that the children jump off of onto piles of blankets, the fireplace hearth where they sit together as a cozy family, the larged framed Family Proclamation on the wall showing their family beliefs, the uncovered windows leading to the backyard with orange trees dressed in lanterns and the soon-to-be Mulberry Bungalow. It's a very comforting sight for anyone. No matter who you are, you feel at home. I don't know about you, but that's how I want my home to feel. So, I bought a coffee table and purchased a few things that don't necessarily "go together" but I love them. I'll post some pictures after I complete a few finishing touches. Does anyone out there have a few decorating tips that they live by?

{christmas 2007 summary}

I love Christmas! Oh, it was such a grand time! We went to California this year to spend it with David's family and it was wonderful. We had so much fun with them and they spoiled us rotten. So much good food, so many wonderful presents, so much laughter.

I especially love my new phone. I've had the stupid Razr for 2 years now and I hated it. If you like your Razr, then please don't take offense (see my comment on the previous post) but it just wasn't working out for me after breaking 3 times. That insurance I had sure came in handy. So, I begged and pleaded with David to get me the new LG Venus with our renewal discount and he did! Yea! I feel so modern and cool now.

It was such fun to spend time with my in-laws. I really feel like we've moved to a new level in our relationship. We played their Wii for hours and busted up at the sound the cow makes when it jumps on the racing Wii Play game. We talked as we made orange rolls, enchiladas and set the table. We shared Christmas traditions around the dinner table and we laughed until we cried as we played games after Christmas breakfast. David's sister and I sang together at the Christmas program and I felt so good when someone at church took David's mom aside and said, "David's wife is lovely. He did very well. You must be so happy." Yep, still smiling.

Overall, I'm so glad that we had loved ones to be with for Christmas. I'm so grateful that we were safe, that we have people who love us and that we could celebrate our belief in Christ's birth and Divinity. It was a lovely Christmas and I hope yours was wonderful too! Thank you all for being my friends and for your wonderful influence on my life.

{christmas on mill avenue}

I love my family. We went to a Christmas concert last weekend in Tempe and then headed over to Mill Avenue for a little gelato after. Only in Arizona can you eat gelato outside in December.

Jay and Alice (sister), David and me, Christian (brother) and NieNie, Madalyn (niece) and my dad.

P.S. David insisted on carrying me around that minute resulting in a rather ugly face.

snow in seattle

The wedding of Stephen and Leone
was wonderful! I love having a new sister-in-law!
She looked beautiful.
My brother looked like he would explode with happiness.
It's all good.

As we walked in to the temple,
we were commenting about how nice it was to have blue skies.
As we walked out of the temple,
we commented (in rather loud tones) about the BLIZZARD
falling all around us!David made funny faces
as I switched between my peep toe pumps and
knee length black boots so as not to get frost-bite
after taking bridesmaid pictures.
My mom insisted we have a sisters and sisters-in-law picture.
Can you tell which of us are related?
The facial cheeks give it away.
Then, the photographer insisted we have a bridesmaid picture
with the bride. Naturally.
There's me on the right, Leone's sister, Leone, Leone's aunt and Leone's best friend.
Oh, wait, what? You want to see a picture of the bride and groom?
Whatever.
Aren't weddings fun?
They are especially in Seattle.

Orange

If you knew my nephew, you would understand why Sarah's blog is called "Orange You Glad". A few months ago, his favorite knock-knock joke was the one that ended with, "Orange you glad I didn't say banana?" No one knows what this joke means except 4-year-olds but you can't help but laugh when you see a child giggle to no end about this silly joke. Being the mother of 4 young children, Sarah has her fill of corny jokes around their house.

Sarah is my brother-in-law's wife, making her my in-law twice. It's a long story and we'll just keep it at that.

The first thing you should know about Sarah is that she has phenomenal quilt-making skills. It seems that she makes one a month and if you saw the beauty and detail of these quilts, it would make you want to pay whatever it took to get her to make you one. I was lucky enough to receive one of her masterpieces as a wedding gift. She is so talented at knowing what is in style and then combining that knowledge with your personal tastes. I would feel confident letting her pick anything out for me to wear, eat, do or decorate with. She has made various quilts for members of my family and every single one is prized and loved. She features her recent quilts on her blog often too so it's a treat to see what she's working on.

The next thing you have to know about Sarah is that she is the kind of person that lights up a room when she arrives. At Sunday dinner with my family, she and her husband will walk in and make everyone smile within the first 30 seconds after they get there. They are the couple that you want to invite to your party because you know that Sarah will be an excellent conversationalist and look fabulous at the same time - therefore making YOU {the host(ess)} look stylish. Besides having impecable taste in clothing, she is also sickeningly beautiful while remaining gloriously humble of the oh, so obvious, fact. Along with that, her husband, Mark, will make everyone roar with laughter with his witty and somewhat sarcastic humor - therefore making the party a laugh-fest that no one will ever forget.

Sarah is also very giving . . . but I'm betting you've already guessed that when I mentioned the several quilts that she has hand-made and selflessly given to people with nothing in return. Another thing you may have guessed is that when she and Mark got married, they combined 2 families into one - not an easy task but because of Sarah's unselfish and giving personality, she swooped up my delicious nephew as one of her own thus combining the two families and bringing eternal bliss to everyone related. That takes a very special person and that's what she is. We all love her incredibly!

I love reading Sarah's blog to catch up on the latest news of my nieces and nephews but also to catch up on the latest styles. She also includes some funny stories every once in a while. This one is my favorite. Be sure to read her blog here.

Melissa

Melissa is another one of my cousins that I didn't get to know very well growing up but I knew that I liked her as a child mainly because she was the daughter of one of my favorite aunts and the sister to some of my most favorite cousins. As we both grew to be adults, I realized a few things about my delightful cousin, Melissa.

Firstly, some of the members of my family have been blessed with dimples. My mother is one of those people but not a-one of her 11 offspring inherited that beautiful trait. Somehow, this cousin and Melissa got them and I have never stopped coveting them!

Secondly, Melissa is also one of those people who seems to always have the right thing to say. She is poised but still helplessly easy-going. She always has something happy to say and it's always a pleasure talking to her. Maybe it's because her dimpled smile is so noticeable that you just have to believe that she's happy. If she's just pretending to be forever in a good mood, then she's definitely fooling everyone.

Melissa is married to quite possibly the biggest tease on the planet. I believe I was a teenager when she married her husband and those years of insecurity and emotion did not go well with his incessant rib-poking, silly jokes and teasing of me and the other teenage cousins that I hung around at family parties. We all secretly thought that Melissa's husband was really cute (in an "older cousin way") and I know that I secretly wished that I could muster up the courage to make fun back. And all along, there stood Melissa who would occasionally let out a comment in her husband's direction to let him know that he better stop bugging us. It was always said very half-heartedly, and she would probably give him a little pat on the bum when she said it, but I remember thinking that I knew that she got the most teasing of us all - at home . . . and she must have a lot of patience and good fun in her. I was right. She does.

Another thing I've always admired about Melissa is how in shape she is. Keep in mind that all her sisters are tall and thin with no "behind" (if you know what I mean) but Melissa has made it a point to exercise and man - you should see the woman's arms! Wowsa! She is a babe. I couldn't find a great picture on her blog to display her arms, but just trust me.

Quite possibly the most important thing is that her sugar cookies are as good, easy and as fun to make as they look. I am NOT KIDDING. She is a baker-pro! It is uncanny how mean her cakes, pies and cookies are. She should look like Paula Deen but in reality, she looks like Heidi Klum.

Good luck trying to be as great as my cousin. If you want, you could try to snag some tips by heading over to her blog where she shares fabulous recipes, book reviews and more.

{the many faces of my links}

Karren
This fireball is one of my favorite cousins. Here are a few reasons why: She loves movies like "Cinema Paradiso", and can quote loads of delicious lines at your request. I'm willing to bet that if she could, she would only dress in Brooks Brothers cashmere sweaters. She's that classy. She has natural, beautiful, black hair that she has never tried to cover up (at least to my knowledge) and has glowing, ivory skin that you want to either touch or steal. She has fantastic taste in music and introduced me to Eisley {bless her soul for that} but not only does she listen to fantastic music, but she also can play fantastic music on her guitar while singing with a low, resonating voice. I’ve heard that her rendition of Matt Pond PA’s makes you wish she would never stop playing.

She is exceptionally well-read. By "well-read", I mean she has read all the books that I've been meaning to read for the last decade but only get about 5 pages into and then get lazy and grab the nearest "Harry Potter" book. For example, she has read Anna Karenina and loved it. Dickens? Check. (I'm willing to bet she even read "Dombey and Son"). Dante? Check. Austen? Devowered. Karren is also really, really, really brilliant. If you knew her family, you would not be surprised. I mean, they’re all brilliant. It’s quite ridiculous. I've heard a rumor that my uncle has a strict rule that before one of his children is allowed to date a person, that person must be able to successfully play an intelligent game of Scrabble with the family, probably using words like "perfunctory" and "antediluvian". She won a Merrill J. Bateman Oustanding award at the J.W. Marriott School of Business where she received her Undergraduate Degree. Here's another article. I told you she is smart.

If you want to catch a glimpse of some more greatness from Karren, head over to her blog as she shares some of her intelligent thoughts, deep observations and inspirational views from books she's read, lectures she's heard and her own convictions and perceptions of life.

Strawbs

He introduced himself as "Strawberry Steve" one day in church and has been known as "Strawbs" ever since. His red hair gives it away. Strangely, finding the right words to describe my brother is harder than I thought but his delightful fiance thought of some great adjectives. "Stalwart" is one of those words. I just love that she came up with that. Just saying the word out loud almost makes it so. Strawbs is committed to doing what is right. He never waivers in his dedication to his family, his religion and his goals.

Another great thing about my brother is what a peacemaker he is. You see, I'm almost certain that Strawbs is the only person in my family with whom I've never had a fight with. He's super nice to every one in the world. Every picture from our childhood, with the two of us in it, usually has Strawbs' chubby little arms around me or else he is laying a big kiss on my cheek. Being surrounded by brothers, I never wanted to play Legos, Transformers or Micromachines so Strawbs played Cabbage Patch with me a few times . . . maybe even Barbies. As we grew into our teenage years, I got nerdy glasses and Strawbs grew a huge bush of thick, red hair as well as a singing group of 5 boys called Euphony 5. Being annoyingly boy crazy, I would desperately make treats for those boys as a bribe to get them to even look in my direction. Strawbs never said anything around them to make me feel bad even though I’m sure he was annoyed with my pathetic attempts for attention (except the one time that he told his best friend that I was in love with him). I also love that he laughs really loud at my jokes so that it covers up how loudly I am laughing myself. Even if they are pity laughs, he is REALLY good at them.

Strawbs is a wonderful photographer. He has taken many pictures of family reunions, portraits, weddings, vacations and has somehow taught himself to be really good at it. So good, in fact, that he started himself a little business called "Orange Life Photography". Don't you love that name and the logo? Strawbs is eternally optimistic and "orange life" perfectly describes his personality.

He is getting married on Saturday to a really wonderful girl that we all like a lot. We're all really jazzed about the whole thing - especially since we all get to go to Seattle for the wedding! His website is rarely updated (like, since February) but here's his photography website and here's their wedding site and his Flickr site.

{the many faces of my links} part 4

alice k{i}nd

Sisters are often a lot alike . . . which is most definitely the case with my sister, Alice k{i}nd. She's so shrewd with all that "k{i}nd" stuff. You see, she really is "k{i}nd" and those letters are also her initials. She's ever so clever. She also really, really loves the Suns.

Alice and I have a lot in common. For example: We both have blonde hair. We both have the same "singing nose". We both love her children . . . a lot. We both love the Imogen Heap song from "The Chronicles of Narnia" and could listen to it on repeat on her kitchen iPod while we discuss the best way to make a recipe.
Another great thing about Alice is that when she was single and living at home, we had to share a room. I don't know how she could bear being 26ish and sharing a bedroom with a young girl at 11ish, but she did. When she would go out on a date, I would lay in bed and watch her get ready in the adjoining bathroom and then she would turn on Christofori's Dream when she left so that I could sleep. I still love that song.
Alice is the busy mother of 3 children. She drives them to and from school, lessons, activities and thousands of other things. She has a singing group for children, a time-consuming church calling, a {really funny and cool} husband and various other activities that take up her blogging time. Be sure to check her blog for sporadic postings. It is very fun read . . . especially when she writes about something her adorable children say or do. See Alice here.

{the many faces of my links} part 3

Eldon

My cousin, Eldon, could have possibly been on my "stranger no danger" list were it not for blogging. Being 15ish years older than myself, we never really spent much time socializing at the family Christmas party . . . especially when our other 90 or so cousins were all there to take up our precious cousin time. Needless to say, I had no idea when I was growing up what a riot he is! Reading his blog has not only let me get to know my cousin a little better but I have also learned a few things from him:

1) Living in San Diego is a dream. Like, I didn't already know that.
2) His wife and children are blonde beauties and he is madly in love with his wife.
3) He seemingly has a very stylish and glamourous work life, including traveling the world and eating interesting things.
4) He is a bit of a crazy person when it comes to ice cream and pumpkin carving.
5) He is a really good Dad.
6) He is super "SoCal" (and by my standards, really cool).

7) He respects women.
Reading Eldon's blog is a little treat for anyone with even half a sense of humor. The experiences he has are pretty commonplace but the way he describes each one and how he reacted, will make you giggle (or perhaps "Guffaw") as you read. His writing style is brutally honest, and therefore, hilarious. Do yourself a favor and read here.

{the many faces of my links} part 2

C Jane

You haven't lived until you've read C Jane's blog. I don't know how she does it, but when this woman blogs it makes you wish you were half as clever (or had half as interesting of a life).

C Jane is NieNie's sister . . . and those two surely love each other. I have 6 sisters of my own but if you combined all of our relationships into one, I don't think you would have the kind of relationship that those two girls have. C Jane is married to a equally fabulous man. I've only met him once and, I have to be honest, he scared me a little with his looming height and bushy beardness. I knew he had to be wonderful though because all I heard around the house was how great Chup (the neighbor) was.
One of the best things about C Jane is her fearlessness. I mean, the girl sang a rendition of cheesy songs in front of my entire family at NieNie's wedding dinner! Now that takes guts. I remember being a little unsure of how to react during her display of music. At 16 years old, I didn't want to laugh at someone older than I (especially a stranger) but her singing was so funny that I'm sure I snickered a little. She lives a ferocious life and couldn't care less if she looks silly doing it.

The best part of C Jane's blog is how easy going she is but in a really anxious sort of way. It's very urgent, the way she writes, like a call to action. Her blog header named, Enjoy It, is self-proclaimed as merely "an invitation not a requirement" but I disagree. It's practically impossible not to Enjoy It around C Jane's blog. She also reads all her comments and will probably respond to them too! Amazing when she gets greater than or equal to 30 comments a day!
Plus, she doesn't get enough credit for how beautiful her house is. She mostly gets credit for being clever, cunning, hilarious and fun to be around. Check out all the fun here.

{the many faces of my links}

Last week, I promised that I would blog about the wonderful folks on my links list. I apologize if some are longer than others but that is just the nature of knowing some of you and hardly/not knowing the rest of you. Here I go with #1 {and then on down the list}:

NieNie

NieNie is my fabulous sister-in-law. She is a world-class blogger. You think I'm exaggerating? NieNie is known in magazines like Cookie Mag, Dolly Mix and the Martha Stewart blog, Blueprint. Her cleverness defies all others.

In real life, NieNie is exceptionally kind. She is not faking the love she has for my brother or her children. She genuinely loves everything about them and helps them be better.

Plus, she is the mother to these children:

NieNie is spectacular with Claire (age 6 today!) in that she is her best friend and helps Claire be confident in her abilities.

NieNie has made sure that Jane (4) is always included. That's a hard task when you have 4 children and they all have strong personalities. Jane is the younger sister with a fiery personality . . . and Stephanie knows how to balance that.

Oliver (3) is an adorable handful. Stephanie has allowed Oliver to experiment with his own boundaries and in the process has molded a little boy with a huge imagination and a love for adventure.

None of us really know what Nicholas' personality is really like at 1 year old, but I can tell you that he loves, loves, loves his mama. She's definitely doing something right.

The best part of her blog, is how good you feel as you read it. NieNie reminds us all that there is beauty in the small things and a light of family that can't be replaced. If you haven't already been a part of the crowd that reads her blog daily, join in here {and check out her recipe blog here}.

10.24.2007

{a home office}

My mom's house is very yellow. Not, like bright yellow or even mustard yellow, but a very muted and hardly noticable yellow. It's very pretty and I've always liked it. The outside matches the inside and it's happy and cheerful - just like my mom.

My mom is repainting her yellow house. Guess what color she is having it painted? You guessed it - yellow. However, I think I successfully convinced her to paint one of the guest rooms a natural spring green and her home office a light blue (think the color of my bedroom).

When we had dinner over there on Monday night, my mom and I did a little rearranging and some brainstorming about her home office. I know I've seen some great ideas out there for organizing a home office but I can't seem to locate any of the websites that held that inspiration. Can any of you help?

10.22.2007

{a dilemma}

The truth of this picture is astounding.

In other news . . .

After my brother sent out a creepy e-mail about blog stalkers, I've been feeling very scared about how public my blog is. Here are my options:

1) Go through each blog entry since May 2005 and omit true names and any indication of where I live.
2) Make my blog private and in the process completely screw myself over with any chance of selling my products on Etsy, forgo possibly rekindled relationships with long-lost friends and feel stupid for actually believing that people will log in to Blogger just to look at my boring blog.
3) Not be scared of blog stalking and take my chances.

Thoughts? I don't know what to do. My choice would be to do Option #1 but that would take me months! Does anyone know of an easier way to do this?

{to marty}

Dear Marcus,

Remember how cool and hardcore we were in front of the British Museum?

Remember how you got totally wasted in Wicklow Jail and those Irish fiends put you on the slow boat to China?

Remember how I was punished for your prohibition crimes and put in the gallows??

Remember how you played the lute at the edge of the Irish Sea like a leprechan . . .

and then, remember how you played "Scarborough Fair" for me on the stone wall overlooking the Irish Sea?

Remember how we sang silly Irish drinking songs even though we didn't know the words?

Remember how cute we were at Tivoli Gardens?

Rememer how high you jumped at Hamlet’s red doors?

Remember how we strolled along this path before we came to the shore of the Baltic Sea?

Remember how your sister loves you?
Remember how she is proud of you for serving a mission in Germany?
Me too.
Love, Elizabeth

9.28.2007

We're off to California to visit David's family for the weekend.

Wish me luck!
